As a recent convert to running and endurance sport, the last thing I needed was a finnicky running shoe, or just another excuse to keep me off the road. So, I reached for the New Balance 880, a shoe that I quickly learned has been highly regarded for it’s no nonsense, neutral simplicity for years. However, describing this shoe as “simple” is a misnomer, it provides all the cushion, ground contact, and energy return that I could want, but nothing that I don’t. And that is not by mistake, this shoe is a product of complex and meticulous design work. For me, the 880 v.9 was an effortless choice, and ultimately enabled me to transition that much more smoothly from the high-octane lacrosse floor to the therapeutic roads and trails that I have consequently grown to love. But what about this new Fresh Foam 880 v.10?
Given the complete overhaul of the entire shoe from upper to outsole, I was shocked at how pleasant and familiar it felt, immediately checking all the boxes. I’ll be the first to admit that for some, the 880 v.9 had its downsides; an unnerving feeling of “flat” or “hardness” was common in the forefoot among customers. To tackle that, New Balance has deployed their proprietary Fresh Foam throughout the midsole of the 880 v.10, offering a truly soft but springy ride. If you wanted to love the 880 v.9 but couldn’t quite come to terms with the aforementioned direct feel, I would recommend giving the Fresh Foam v.10 an honest shot. In addition, the Hypoknit mesh upper is lightweight and structured, perfect for those who value the ability to wiggle their toes but not spill over the edge when taking a turn. Another feature I highly value is the tongue of this shoe. In other models, New Balance has recently opted for a fully sewn-in (almost sock like) tongue, limiting the modulation and ease of use of your lacing and closure system. Thankfully for my sake, the 880 v.10 sticks to the classic cushioned tongue that many of us know and love, easy to slip on and easy to take off. Lastly, the new rigid heel counter is also a welcomed upgrade, providing more structure and security to the fit.
It is important to remember however, that this shoe is more than just the sum of its parts, the real beauty is in the whole package. Simply put, the Fresh Foam 880 v.10 is my peace of mind. Whether zipping through a track workout or crushing out those last couple kilometers on a long morning, this shoe is my solid, no fuss standby, and you’ll likely catch me wearing a pair on any given day. With the Fresh Foam 880 v.10, New Balance has truly taken a classic and made it even better.
